Letters to a Christian

The Christian life is a journey—and we need not take it alone. As we follow Jesus, we walk alongside fellow pilgrims, and we trace the steps of those who have gone before. We all have something to learn from one another. As the former editor-in-chief of Bible Study Magazine, John D. Barry has had a unique opportunity to share insights from his own journey in the form of letters from the editor. With this compilation, he now invites you to join his journey of personal exploration, faith, and transformation.

Top Highlights

“Questioning everything only produces doubt if we don’t believe there are answers. But having confidence to find answers transforms our questions into a pursuit of truth, and our questions can ultimately reveal the one who is the truth—Christ (John 14:6).” (source)

“The Bible is complex because God is complex. Parts of it go down easy, but other parts require chewing and time for digestion. We need to go beyond Bible reading to ‘Bible thinking.’ Ask the hard questions. Seek answers with an open heart, letting good resources and the Holy Spirit guide you. It may be a little intimidating and difficult, but it’s worth it—it will taste so much better.” (source)

“What good is faith if it’s not transformative? We are not in the conversion business; if we were, we would merely be selling something. We’re in the business of real and substantial change—of making disciples.” (source)

“The scale of God’s reach to humanity is startling. The God who showed up in unexpected forms—like a burning bush (Exod 3) and as a wrestling angel (Gen 32:22–32)—now comes as a suffering servant (Luke 18:31–33; compare Isa 52:13–53:12).” (source)

“Like our great teacher, we should ask questions—whether we’re teaching someone else or are engaged in study on our own.” (source)
