What Is “FatCat?”

How can anyone, no matter how young or old, grasp the message of the Bible? The church’s answer has always been the catechism: The Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments.

The catechism teaches us what the Bible teaches us: our faith. The catechism is “fat,” bursting at the seams with meaning and challenge. FatCat is our way of making the catechism approachable, bringing theology to readers of all ages.

Praise for the FatCat Books

The FatCat series gives children a vision of the Bible’s ethic (in the Ten Commandments), its confession (as summarized in the Apostles’ Creed), and its devotional life (given to us in the Lord’s Prayer). This ancient-but-new set of lenses, what the church has called the ‘rule of faith,’ will equip your kids for a lifelong Christian journey.

In Keep Us This Day, Keep Us This Night, Natasha Kennedy and Todd R. Hains present a Morning Prayer and an Evening Prayer for all God’s children. This is the newest release in the FatCat Books series, and my kids already know to look for FatCat and his friends on every page. I love the concept of this “flip” book—read the morning prayer during the day, then flip the book over to read the evening prayer at night. It’s a simple yet well-executed idea that encourages and nurtures the practice of prayer. Protection and Provision What I absolutely love about this book is that the morning prayer section features a family from Korea, while the evening prayer section shows a family from America. It’s a beautiful depiction of believers from around the world. This book will help you teach your children that our Lord protects and provides for us each morning and evening. I received a media copy of Keep Us This Day, Keep Us This Night and this is my honest review. @diveindigdeep

The newest FatCat is a double feature, two beautifully illustrated small prayerbooks bound together. The first half the book is a family prayer for the morning. Flip the book over and find a family prayer for the evening. Psalm 121 is at the center of the volume, laid out in such a way to invite call and response recitation of the psalm for a family to do together as a benediction to their prayer time. As with all the FatCat books, the illustrations here are warm and inviting for readers of all ages. All of the critter friends from previous volumes are here, not least FatCat hiding on every page. Readers are also invited to look for evidence of God’s Word (as a Bible, as a song, as art, etc.) on each page. One of my favorite features in this series entry are the pages for morning prayer. Readers follow the morning routine of a Korean family who begin their day with prayer and Bible reading, with illustrations that include Korean Bible verses sprinkled throughout. Keep Us This Day/Night is a sweet, concise, beautifully illustrated children's two-books-in-one for morning and evening prayer. Including Psalm 121 at the center reminds readers that the Psalter itself is the Church’s original prayerbook, and the Psalms still have a needed role to play in our life of prayer. This is another excellent entry in Lexham’s fantastic series of children’s books. Disclosure: I received a copy of the book for free from the publisher. I was not asked to provide a positive review, and this in no way affected my review.
