The Collected Christian Essentials: Catechism

A Guide to the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer

by Peter J. Leithart, Ben Myers & Wesley Hill

The catechism— the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer—has sustained and nurtured every generation of believers, directing their faith, hope, and love. It helps Christians read, pray, and live God’s word. By giving Christians God’s word to give back to him, it plants seeds of his word and cultivates them to full growth. The Collected Christian Essentials: Catechism brings the church’s ancient catechism to a new generation.

Prayers for Advent

The four weeks of Advent are a time to ponder and pray the life of Jesus—in particular, “he was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.” In his conception and birth, Jesus reveals God’s power. God’s power is not like human power—the violence of soldiers and the distortion of words. God’s power is a word of promise spoken to a virgin: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. ... For nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:35, 37).

Prayers for Lent

The forty days of Lent are a time for pondering and praying the life of Jesus—in particular, “he suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.” In his death and suffering, we find life. When we know Christ and the power of his death and resurrection, we also share in the fellowship of his sufferings (Phil 3:10). There’s joy hidden in suffering with Christ. “You have died, and your life is hidden with God” (Col 3:3).
