In This Way We Came to Rome

With Paul on the Appian Way

by Glen L. Thompson and Mark Wilson

Authors Glen L. Thompson and Mark Wilson draw from both ancient records and modern research to offer the most complete account available of Paul’s journey along the ancient world’s most famous road—the Appian Way. In addition to geographical and historical insights, the authors provide numerous images, maps, and GPS coordinates, allowing the reader to experience Paul’s journey and better understand the ancient world in which he spread the gospel.

“A model guide to the journey by road from Puteoli to Rome during the early Roman empire—clear, engaging, up-to-date, with excellent maps and photos. Let’s go!”

—Richard Talbert, Research Professor of History, University of North Carolina; editor of Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World

Appendix — GPS Coordinates

This chart gives all the coordinates marked in In This Way We Came to Rome. They are listed in order from Puteoli to Rome, as Paul would have passed them. When a feature (such as extant paving) extends for some length, coordinates are given for its beginning and end, calculated in the direction Paul was traveling. The road column gives the location on the road in front of the item mentioned. The object column gives locations for the objects themselves. The GPS location, given in decimal form, is limited to five places, and should be accurate to within a few meters. Readings that are described as “approx(imate)” are either (1) locations the authors have not visually seen on the ground or via Google Satellite or Street View imagery, (2) locations we have not been able to confirm through reliable third parties, or (3) are based on our calculations from other known sites and/or ancient descriptions.
