Steve Zakuani

Steve Zakuani is a former professional soccer player in Major League Soccer.

Steve Zakuani was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, moving to London when he was four years old.

His soccer career started early in life playing for the Arsenal youth academy in London, and then attending the University of Akron on a soccer scholarship. Zakuani’s professional career began when the Seattle Sounders drafted him with the first pick of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. He was a finalist for MLS Rookie of the Year in 2009, and in 2010 he was the joint-leading scorer for the Sounders with 10 goals. In the 2010 MLS postseason he scored the Sounders first ever MLS Playoff goal.

In total, Zakuani played six seasons as a professional, amassing over 100 appearances but he will be the first to admit that a series of injuries severely limited what he could have achieved on the field.

Steve founded Kingdom Hope in 2010, to share his story of overcoming the adversities that accompany growing up in a low-income neighborhood of London. Through the help of various mentors in his life, Steve was able to realize his potential and achieve his dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. Kingdom Hope offers programs designed to help people fulfill their dreams and find success in life.
